Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana

I have a friend who sadly took his life the day his wife served him with divorce papers. He had 2 children with his first wife. He and his second wife had no children and were legally seperated. His first wife was recently informed by the social security administration that the childrens benefits are going to be reduced to give half of them to his second wife. The divorce wasn't finalized so therefore she believes that she is entitled to more money. Would it do any good to contact social security and see if they will reconsider?

She can try, but generally married is marrried, and divorce doesn't happen until the divorce is final.
