Can a non-custodian father just call and demand that he is going to pick up a child the next night without scheduling it a few days in advance?

The noncustodial father can request anything he wants, but that does not mean that he will receive it. Prior notice for visitation request is handled on a case-by-case basis, and is not absolutely necessary that a minimum number of days of advance notice be provided. You need to use your common sense.
