Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana

Older Child Adoption

Since we have had two other lawyer assisted older child adoptions, we decided to do this last adoption ourselves. The child is a ward of the court in a nearby county. The county is in agreement with the adoption. Parental rights were terminated two years ago and the child has been with us the appropriate amount of time. We have just filed the Petition to Adopt with the supporting documents. What next? We know there is a court hearing, but who prepares the Adoption Decree and when is it done?

Re: Older Child Adoption

You would prepare the decree and take it to the final adoption hearing.

You can use the previous documents as models, though if the laws have changed since the time of those adoptions, the decrees might need to be altered in ways you're unaware of.

It would definitely be worth your time to check out some do-it-yourself books on adoption to make sure you have all your bases covered.

Best of luck to you!
