Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana

Who owns the "Engagement Ring" ??

On March 28, 1998 I ended an engagement. I have a letter in my possession (dated 3/29/98)where my ex-fiance said: "I do not want the ring back, I gave it to you for forever."

Now, out-of-the-blue, and a year later (4/14/99)he is demanding the ring back. I have not heard from him in almost a year. He says that he has discussed this with attorneys and is correct in asking for it back or a cash settlement for it. Its value is approx: $12K Can he do this? Or is this some form of harrassment? What are my rights?

Do I need to get an attorney to fight this? He also made me sign off of property and as corporate Secy-Tres of a company he owns, never giving me copies of the filed documents. He is a powerful person of means and it scares me to think of what he might do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Who owns the

The letter you have is evidence that he intended the ring to be a gift. He parted with all dominion and control over the item and no longer has an ownership interest. It also could be argued that it was in settlement of the property rights you gave up when the engagement was called off. Get a lawyer.
