Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana

My question is...

How do I go about getting joint custody? When my son was 5 the government made me go find his dad and go after him for child support. Well at the time I was on cash assistance, food stamps, and medicaid. Now I am only on food stamps and medicaid. What do I need to do to get joint custody with him, like can I just go file a paper or do I need to hire a lawyer? Is this something we can do, get joint custody, with me being on assistance? Thanks for your time and consideration.

Your situation of being on assistance has nothing to do with custody. Please repost and state who has custody now.
