Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana
reimbursment
i did not know what category of law to use to ask this question. during the course of a serious relationship (but not a marriage or an engagement) i was given a car. the relationship has ended and the man i had the relationship with has so seriously misunderstood my attempts to talk things out and come to peace- that he has threatened to file harrassment charges against me if i contact him further. i wish two things. one to have a personal item i loaned him back (something that has NO monetary value- only sentimental value to me) AND i also wish to reimburse him for this car but i do NOT have the money to do so all at one time. in fact it will probably take me many years but i do NOT feel right about just keeping it nor do i want to keep it without paying him back- it's kind of an emotional point of pride or something for me, i guess. anyway, if i hire an attorney to set up some kind of arrangement to reimburse him and also to ask for the item of sentimental attachment for me back, would this be considered to be harassment by law? he lives in one state and i live in another if that makes any difference. thank you.

Re: reimbursment
Instituting litigation is not generally considered harassment unless the court determines that the litigation is frivolous. You do need to consult a lawyer about getting back property that was loaned. If the vehicle was a gift, you have no obligation to reimburse the cost of the same under any terms. You should not feel morally obligated to reimburse someone for a gift.
