Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana

My son is now 7 years old, and his father wants nothing to do with him. I was wondering what are the laws for abandonment? We both went down to the prosecuting attorneys office for him to sign away his rights and they told us that it had to be someone to step in and take his place. What does that consist of? Will this person have to pay child support? or can they just say that they will agree to step in and be a father figure to my son?

Not a "father figure", an actual father is required. Someone who is married to you and willing to take on lifetime responsibility for this child no matter what. The court will not approve an adoption to a boyfriend, and that would be no good for your son anyways.

Absent a CHINS action, an adoption is needed in order for the father to sign away his rights.
