Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana

Stopping Child Support for an Adult

I didn't know I had a 14 year old child until I got a request for a paternity test. When she turned 18 I tried to get the payments stopped. She has never finished high school and she, at age 18 and her mother lied in court that she was a A+ student graduating now 4 years ago. The adult I am paying child support payments for is now 22 years old, has a child, and lives on her own.

I have sent requests for termination and review to the Lake County Division of Family and Children many times. They will not respond to me to clear this up even though I have sent them all the information they requested.

I have 4 young children and a wife who need my financial support. Can someone help me? I don't know what else to do?

I want the payments to stop and I want an accounting of all of the payments taken from my tax refunds and employment. I know I have over paid for years now, can I get that money back? I also, want my credit report to be updated/revised correcting this issue.

Re: Stopping Child Support for an Adult

You must have a lawyer file a motion in the Court on your behalf to emancipate the child. Phone calls will not work. As a former Director of the Child Support Division of Lake County, I can tell you that the system is overwhelmed with cases and your sending a letter or trying to talk with someone is not going to get you anywhere.
