Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana

I am in a verbaly and mentally abusive marriage. He and i have 6 kids ages 17-9. I cant take more and want to go to a womens shelter. I live in Indiana. would me leaving be considered abandoning my children? I also have nothing; no money, no car, no job, no credit card, etc. He made sure of that. I also would like to know if a lawyer can wait till tax time comes to get paid? He always does taxes in January over internet.

Talk to the folks at the women's shelter in your area before leaving about availability of space for children, and for attorneys who might be willing to work with you on fees. Good luck.
