Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Indiana
Check Deception
I do not have a record and I had my first returned check--I didn't know about it until I got a summons, I pleaded not guilty because I would have paid it if I had known. (I don't keep a good enough eye on my checkbook.) The check was for $24.00 I am going to represent myself. I was nervous and now I don't know what to do. Can I call the person(s) the check was written to and try make payment arrangements and pay court costs, if not, what is the process in a trial? Should I have chosed to get a lawyer or will I probably just explain the truth to them and have to pay a fine? I have no idea what to do. Please advise. Thank you

Re: Check Deception
You failed to metion whether there is a criminal matter. If not, there wont be a fine and you should contact the other party, offer to pay court costs, the returned check fee and the amount of the check.
