Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Indiana

We let someone live here for 200 a month. They never paid for the 5 mo. they lived here and had $500 saved in a box of ours. We got in an arguement and when they left they said they didn't care. Keep it. Now 2 months have past and they want it back. They say it was said out of anger and deny the agreement. Now they are saying its theft and are threatening to call the cops on us? We feel its rightfully ours when 200 was never paid to us, we bought 200 a week in groceries and they never had to buy food, shampoo, toothpaste, laundry soap, had everything they needed and really only had to buy deodorant. We even had directv/plasma tv for them to use in a room made up for them furnished with a bed, small sofa and small kitchen table/chairs?

You can't just keep their money unless it was formally part of a security deposit. You need to go to small claims court and obtain a judgment for what is owed to you and then ask permission of the court to garnish and attach the $500. You must follow procedure.
