Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Indiana

Someone owes me money

In 2001 I lived in Indiana with a roomate. When I moved out in 2002 her boyfriend moved in with her. I was stupid to leave the electricity in my name but I did because when I called to change it there was a fee and I didn't want my friends to have to pay it. Since then, they have broken up and he was living in the apartment alone. He moved last month and I got a call from a collection agency saying the electric bill hasn't been paid and I had to pay $220 or it would go on my credit report. Of course I paid it. I hadn't spoken to the guy in a while and when i called him and told him what happened, he seemed fine and said he would pay me. I have had a really terrible time trying to get the money from him, and when he finally did send a check it bounced so I got fees from my bank for that too. Since then he said he would Western Union the money, but hasn't done it yet. I've called and called and he won't answer, I finally emailed him and he was upset and said he is going to talk to a lawyer about my harrassing phone calls. (''harrassing'' meaning that I've called, emailed, and text messaged him about 100 times). I know that techinically I am responsible for the debt, but is there anything that I can do to get my money back?

Re: Someone owes me money

The short answer is that you will, in all probability, never see that money. And it will cost you more both in terms of money and time that it is not worth while pursuing it in court. A lawsuit in small claims court cost about $170 to file, another $50 or so for service of process... and then there are the times you have to appear in court etc... Simply not worth it.

You should learn from this experience and put it aside and forget it. Accept your mistake for having trusted people you should not have. remember it. Don't repeat it. Move on.
