Legal Question in Immigration Law in Indiana

citizenship

my husband and i have been married for eleven years. he is from south africa and has permanent residence. his card expired in 11/2008. we havent had the money to file the citizenship forms yet. we plan to do this when we get our tax return back. is there any negative consequences for allowing the residence to expire?

We get a question like this on almost a daily basis. It would be best to renew the green card because he may have to travel. However, renewing the green card is not necessarily required. Just because the green card expires does not mean that the lawful permanent residence status of the individual has expired.

Why don't you renew the lawful permanent residence prior to applying for citizenship, okay! I recommend it. As long as you don't have any criminal convictions, you can apply for citizenship later. Good luck!
