Legal Question in Immigration Law in Indiana

Can an illegal alien get a legal work visa?
My girlfriend has a situation where she came to the U.S. on a 1 year work visa. The company had financial problems after she got here and laid her off after the 3rd month. I'm assuming that her status has now changed to that of an illegal. Can she get hired at a different company and gain a work visa through the new company? Can she stay in the US (legally) while she waits?

It really depends on how long she has been out of work. Please let me know when she stopped working.
