Questions allowed by employers when announcing pregnancy

When I tell my boss of my pregnancy are they legally allowed to ask me if I plan on returning to work after the baby? If they do ask me, am I required to give them an answer at that time? I plan on giving ample notice, but don't feel that they need to know at this point in time.
