Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Indiana

My fraternity never owned a house and recently just got accepted to get one. In order to keep the house, the fraternity must have X amount of people signed to live in the house by X date. I was one of the people who signed the lease, but later decided to get off because of life. I went to the landlords office to ask how to get off it she said i needed a letter written by the fraternity stating my release. Doing exactly that i went to a couple brother from the board (vice president and treasurer) and explained to them I need a letter from them stating my release from the lease. Agreeing to our discussion they told me they would write it and send it to the landlord. Months later the landlord called me demanding money and I said I'm not living there, what do you mean? Apparently she never got the letter. I contacted the people who were suppose to write the letter and send it to her and they claim they swore they saw me off the list. Before our conversation ended they assured me they would figure it out. Since then I never heard anything about that situation again until a week before thanksgiving when I received a letter from an attorney stating to give money to this landlord. Now I requested to be released from the lease a month or two or more before the lease actually started. But she is demanding I pay two months rent which equals $800+ late payment fee $100+ attorney fee $80. How is this fair? I took appropriate steps to get off the lease. I can only do so much until it's left to someone else to finish it. The fraternity's mistakes shouldn't penalized me. What is your advice for this situation?
