Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Indiana
I have a problem that I am not sure how to go about handling. I had lived with two roommates for a period of time and about six months into the lease, I began a relationship with someone one of my roommates had introduced me to. About a month into the relationship he had lost his home and had nowhere else to turn. I made arrangements for him to have a new place but the day before he was set to move in, the agreement fell through. It was winter time and did not want him to freeze to death in his car so he slept in my bedroom. As "payment" he cleaned and helped out with our laundry but mostly kept to himself and minded his own business. One morning, my one roommate flipped. She said he had to get out immediately, for no reason other than "just because". I began to get harassing text messages repeatedly sent to me and was forced to block her number. They also went as far as contacting my parents, feeding them absurd stories about my "dangerous" boyfriend and lies about my schooling. I am well over eighteen. This did not get the reaction they had wanted, apparently, so they took more drastic measures. They attempted to have me evicted but had no grounds. Then they started calling the police on my boyfriend, for trespassing. Those did not stick either. I was escorted finally from the apartment "for my safety and the safety of my belongings" was what I was told by the officers. I went to my landlord to work out an agreement with them because it was very apparent at that point that living with them was not an option ( I shared a room with one of the girls). They were unwilling to work something out with me other than continuing to pay on a joint lease for a place I was told not to enter without police escort. I had no other choice at this point than to find a new place to live. Now, I am being threatened to be taken to court by the two girls for not paying the rent on a place they made unsuitable for me to live in. Is there anything I can do to ensure I do not have to pay them $1100 for this mess or do I have any laws in my defense? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
