Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Indiana

I rented a barbershop for 3 years 1 month. I paid $300 monthly to rent the shop. There was never a lease. In January 2009 the owner told me to not pay rent since I was trying to purchase the property. I tried for months to get the financing but was unable to get it he was asking $200k. Then on May 26 2009 I told him it was very unlikely I will get the financing. That same day he told me I must be out by the end of the week,he gave me 5 days notice to leave,so I did I left on May 30 2009 (he was very mad because I could not buy it). Then in September of 2010 I received a letter from small claims court he is suing me for $1500 (which is the 5 months rent). Since I've left he has since sold the property. So am I legally responsible to pay that money to him? Also can u give me any more advice since about this matter because there was Never any lease or even a oral agreement to how long I would rent the shop.

Depending on the agreement that he has with his purchaser, he may or may not be able to sue.

If he is, you probably owe him the rent.
