Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Indiana

I reside in hammond, indiana and on 7/25/10 i signed a lease that begins on the 1st day of August 2010. Two days ago i received a call from my landlord saying that my rent is due on the 25th day of each month. After looking at the lease again I notice that it does state that but it still leaves me confused because at the time of the lease signing the house was not ready for rent due to she was waiting for the windows to be replaced and for the carpet to be replaced. I also was not issued any keys on that date. And if my lease started august 1st how can she ask for rent payments before the end of the month? Is there anything that I can do because the amount for late fees is crazy and it was an oversite on my part and now i feel trapped because I don't have money to pay those crazy late fees

The lease would need to be reviewed before an answer could be given. I do not know whether you qualify for services but you may want to contact the Hammond Legal Laid Office. Also, on Martin Luther King Day, I beleive that there will be free "Ask the LAwyer" Clinics throught the county. Good lcuk.
