Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Indiana
No clues
On 6/8, I filed a theft report with a Sullivan County Deputy. 6/18 I called the prosecutor's office. They have no clues. 6/18 called the Sheriff's office; they have no clues. The lady at the Sheriff's Dept said,
''If you have a copy of that report, you could take it to the prosecutor's office yourself and follow up on that.'' I said ''if I have to do that, I want to get PAID for doing YOUR JOB!'' I told them I have more information on the possible whereabouts of the stolen items. She didn't want to hear it.
MY QUESTION TO YOU IS: Isn't there any type of professional responsibility on the part of the Sheriff's Department or Town Marshall, to follow through on such a report? On ANY report for that matter? Don't they have a code of ethics? I feel that I am not only in danger from the thief and his accomplices, but from the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department due to their lack of -due diligence? I am not sure that is the proper word/phrase to plug in there! You would have to live there to believe it! HELP!

Re: No clues
Trying to get reluctant law enforcement to do its job is usually quite frustrating. No, they don't have a code of ethics, and unfortunately very little oversight.
Such complaints are best made to the Attorney General's office. They have the ability to do something, if they will. You really don't have any other effective remedies.
