Legal Question in Personal Injury in Indiana

If someone leaves a possession in your car and you're involved in an auto accident afterwards, are you liable for their posessions? My daughter's friend left her camera in my daughter's car, as she didn't want to carry it. My daughter never saw the camera. She was then involved in a single-car accident and the car was totalled. The camera was never found. The friend is holding my daughter resposible for her camera. Does the friend assume the risk for her posessions if she chooses to leave them in my daughter's car?
