Legal Question in Personal Injury in Indiana

We live in Indiana and are both in our 60's. We have a 19 year old son who still doesn't have his driver's license. Right now he is depending on the kindness of friends with cars to take him places and he has no job. We were going to buy a car and insure it with our insurance company (Farm Bureau) for 6 months for him so he can look for a job and have transportation to work. The car costs $5000 and the insurance (full coverage) $1000 and we wonder what our liability will be should he have an accident in a car we bought and insured. We hesitate not to put it in our name as well as his because we don't want him to sell it and buy something else he wants with the money and end up without transportation again. We worry about our liability if it is in our name however. We worry he won't continue to insure it after 6 months, especially if he can't find a fulltime job. He lost his health insurance when he quit going to college full-time and turned 19. We don't know if we should even buy the car. He is quite irresponsible with his and our belongings and immature. However, where we live you have to have dependable transportation and drive as most jobs are 15-30 miles away. We want to move him toward a more responsible lifestyle. What would you suggest about the car?
