Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Indiana

Liability for land owned

I recently bought 16 acres of land that borders our current 10 acre woods in Indiana. My question is, the family that we bought the land from would like to have some use to the land as a favor. I would like to do this, but am concered over the liability. The land has a meadow that one of the family members would like to bale for straw, as they have done in the past. Another family member that we are buying the land from wants to continue to hunt in the woods portion of the land. We have never let people hunt on our land in the past, but would like to do so for this gentleman, since it was his families land. We have no plans for developing the 16 acres. Are we setting ourselves up for liabilty letting this land be used in anyway? Thank-you.

Re: Liability for land owned

Tell the neighbor to provide you with insurance that indemnifies you for his injuries in using your land or write up a contract/agreement that outlines what you will not be reponsible for and have him agree to indemnify you against damages for his injuries. I would however be cautious about allowing hunting - even by a friend or neighbor, since it is difficult to control once others have seen someone hunting there. They don't always ask if then can hunt. Be sure to have it posted. County Sheriffs are more likely to take your concerns about trespassers hunting if your land is posted.
