Open lease

If my girlfriend and I sign a 6 month lease and when it is up we are given an open lease and 6 months later my girlfriend and I split up and we inform the landlord that i am not going to be living there any more would I be liable for the past due rent after I left?

By signing a lease you are bound by the lease for the term of the lease and depending upon those terms also bound by it for so long as you remain in possession of the leased premises. Be sure to check the terms of the lease for the proper method of notification if one of you only is moving out at any point in time. As long as you follow the termination provisions then you should not be liable after your notice period.
