Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Indiana
right to property
I currently live with my sister and her family. She is in the process of getting a divorce and her husband still lives there. He steals money from her whenever he can get the chance. He has admitted to doing drugs and uses that money to buy them. He does not pay bills on time. For this reason I refuse to give him any money to pay bills since he's not paying. I do however watch their daughter when I'm needed to. His dad has actually paid for most of the bills this last year and is paying for the divorce attorney. He searches my room every weekend when I am not there. Recently a memory card out of my camera has been stolen. Who has the right to the property I have in that room. Since I do not pay rent does he have the right to come in and search through my belongings for money my sister may have hidden in my room?

Re: right to property
Your room is your room, and you are entitled to privacy. Your property is your property, and no one is entitled to take it. Certainly your sister's husband, a soon to be ex-tenant of the property, is nothing more than a thief if he takes anything from your room.
