Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Indiana

recover for repair if evicted

My wife and I are living with her mother. The house we are living in need extensive repair. My mother-in-law doesn't have the funds to do the repair work so I agreed to do it for her as I live here too. My wife and I don't have high-paying jobs so money is tight and we pay part of the monthly bills in exchange for living here.I told my mother-in-law that since I'm doing the repair work,I can't afford to pay my part of the bills. At first she agreed to this, but now she is telling my wife that if I don't start paying for my part, she is going to evict me. Can I place a lien against the property to recover the money I put into her house if she does evict me? I have kept all the receipts for the materials. If not, what can I do?

Re: recover for repair if evicted

A mechanics lien is about your only remedy in this situation. Be aware that you only have 60 days to get one filed.
