Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Indiana
Being sued
I am being sued after the other two tenants (divorcee and divorcees sister) left and failed to pay. I was paying the massive rent on my own for a few months until I lost my job. I made known to my landlord that the other two had left and he said that he would work with me. A few months later I was laid off and relayed this to my landlord and was told, again, that it would be ok and he would work with me. A week ago my landlord entered the premisis unannounced at 8am yelling ''is anyone home'' and asked for a key to my garage. We spoke and he asked if I knew I was late on rent. I sayed yes and he said that if I could be out within 30 days that he would go after the other two tenants and not me. less than a week later I find court papers suing me and the other tenents (that no longer live here). while asking him why he did this he said ''because I just got screwed out of 900$ by someone else.''
Is there something that makes the things he said before valid even though it wasnt written down? I was looking for a new place and now am faced with papers suing me for ''possible property damage'' and the late rent.

Re: Being sued
The landlord's offer to forebear some of his remedies against you is not enforceable unless you can show your reliance cost you something. Which it doesn't appear from your question that it did. Leases and back rent are dischargeable in a bankruptcy case, if you need to.
