should an attorney have a signed copy of my dads will?

Not necessarily, though if he has submitted one to teh court for probate, he should have kept one in the file. If your question is whether an attorney is always supposed to keep a signed copy of the will for everyone who has ever had that attorney write a will for them, the answer is no.
