IRS form 706

Should the Attorney (with no accounting background) or the CPA (who has done the 1040's for the deceased) fill out and file IRS form 706 for a $1.5 million estate?

Re: IRS form 706

A truthful answer to your question is "it depends." To me the key question you need to ask is how many 706s either party has completed. Also, the complexity of the return is another important piece of the equation. If the assets of the estate are easily valued, and there are no issues with other trusts, spousal issues, etc., then the 706 is not that hard to complete.

I cannot give you a definite yes or no, but I hope this helps in asking the right questions if you are concerned.

In most of these cases, the accountant and attorney work together in getting the form prepared. Some parts are best done in consultation between the experts.
