A probate specialist is not required for a probate contest. Many lawyers in Indiana have enough experience with probate matters to competently handled a probate contest even though they primarily practice in other areas. So if you do not know a lawyer, ask your local county bar association for a referral, and request someone with experience in probate matters.

No, it is not necessary to have a "probate attorney" when questioning the handling of an estate. There are many general practice attorneys who are well versed in probate matters, just as they might be in other areas of the law, such as business law, contracts, personal injury, etc. Your main concern is whether he/she knows probate law, not whether he/she only practices in that area.
