Legal Question in Business Law in Iowa
Grounds for an employer to hold an employees paycheck
I'm a poor college student working part time job at a private company. A notice was posted today declaring that the following employees paychecks would be withheld until we bring a copy of our class schedule to the office. Is this legal? I know it is a rule here but can they withhold paychecks for hours already worked? I thought that they could suspend us until we abide by their rules or fire us but what about my money?

As a Franchise Attorney I can only say that normally a paycheck must be given within a certain timeframe as provided by state law. You can always contact your state's employment development or labor department. They can answer your question and take action, if necessary. Or you can simply bring in your class schedule, which seems the quickest solution for now. Consult with a good business or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice.

No, they cannot hold your check for this reason. Contact Iowa Workforce Development, or an attorney in your area. I have no idea how a franchise attorney would be beneficial--you should be fine with an attorney in general practice.
Thomas is correct on all counts.
