is it illegal to sell replica handbags if you inform them they are just look alikes and are in no way associated with high end designers?

It's arguable one way or another. There's potential for intellectual property fraud charges to be filed, and don't forget you would probably be civilly liable to the people whose designs you propose to expropriate to your own benefit.
