Legal Question in Business Law in Iowa
Independant Contractor Legal Rights
I am an independant contractor for a Newspaper company - I in turn hire people to be independent contractors under me as carriers for the Newspaper. In my contract (written by the main company) it states that the carrier must give 30 days notice of intentions of quitting otherwise they forfeit up to their last 2 paychecks. What are my actual legal rights to this? Do I have to pay them if they all of a sudden quit without even telling me or showing up to do the work that I hired them to do?

I think you do not have to pay them for work they do not do. I question whether you can withghold their pay for two pay periods, but if the people signed off on the agreement maybe you can.
The wiser course is to pay them only what they earned-otherwise you risk a lawsuit.
