Legal Question in Business Law in Iowa
Is this legal?
I was hired 7-9-2001, to a company that employed apx. 2,500 employees. In October 2001 we mergered with a bigger company of appx. 45,000 employees. On 4-4-2002, I was let go from my position. I received no prior notice of this ''lay off''. I received two weeks severance pay. With no intent to be re-hired - due to down sizing.

Re: Is this legal?
Yes it is, unless you have an employment contract that states otherwise. We are an at will state, meaning an employee can be terminated at any time with or without cause. There is a rule of thumb that an employee that is terminated is given 1 to 2 week severence pay for each year worked. You got that. Unless there is some discrimination the termination was proper.
