Legal Question in Business Law in Iowa

I have a previous employer that withheld the first paycheck dates 2-23-09 thru 3-7-09. I did not recieve my first paycheck until 3-17-09. I was told by other employees that this is a common practice among some employers and would not recieve this check until termed or I quit. I recently quit on 7-22-09 and returned on the next payroll date to pick up my withheld check. The company proceeded to tell me that they don't withold the first check and that I needed to fill out a missing check document. I have yet to hear back from the company and cannot afford a lawyer. I would like to know first is this practice actually legal? Second, what steps should I take to get this issue resolved?

I would suggest that you contact the legal aid society or perhaps the Iowa State Bar Association's Volunteer Lawyer's Project to get you some assistance. Nothing says "I care" quite like a letter from your lawyer.

Under Chapter 91A this is illegal and you can get attorney fees and liquidated damages. I'm very busy this week but if you send me a private email through my lawfirm website I'll get your paycheck. We may even have some fun with them by suing they and seeing who else they've done it to. Steve Lombardi
