Legal Question in Business Law in Iowa

I am a subcontractor for a contractor who delivers parmecuticals for a pharmacy. About a month ago they started requiring us to use a scanner so that they could track where we have been. I have no problem using this little hand held scanner. Today one of the other subcontractors was told by the manager of the contractor we are driving for that we are now being required to pay 17.50 a week for the scanner. Is this legal? As it is we don't make a whole ton of money and now they are cutting into our bottom line. I need advise. Thank you!

It's not illegal because there is no law against such a requirement, but as Robert points out what does your contractual agreement with the company allow or require? You have to read the contract you entered into that forms the business relationship. Probably you need to have someone trained in contracts to read it and to give you advice about the matter. This brings up another point about whether or not you had an attorney review the contract before you signed. Did you? Probably not, so now you need to consider the terms you originally agreed to and how that affects what charges are acceptable. So as we often say, "See a lawyer."
