Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Iowa

Abuse of Privacy

I work for a company who employs many non English-speaking persons. I am very fluent in Spanish, and the company is short on their interpreting staff. There is a nurse's station on the premises where work-related medical matters are taken care of. One day there was a problem with an employee in my work station, and my supervisor asked me to accompany him to the nurse's station to translate. At that time, I was not an official plant interpreter. I had access to personal information and medical history concerning this person. I even helped her fill out medical forms revealing to me medical and personal information, including the name of her personal physician, medications she was taking, health problems she was experiencing, etc. If she wants to cause legal problems for the company by claiming that action to be unethical and a violation of her privacy, would she have a case?

Re: Abuse of Privacy

It's doubtful. There's no private right of action under HIPAA.
