Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Iowa

court supena and testifiy question

I have a friend that was just supenaed to court.

She is supposed to tetifiy along with 3 other people of something that happend a while ago.

The reason for this question is she is being told that she has to testify against these people. These people may or may not be guilty and they are also close friends in a very very small town. I am wondering if there are any laws saying she HAS to testify. Does she not have a choice? pleade the 5th? is there anything she can do NOT to testify. they have other witnesses. the crime was under age possesion and she was not drinking, so they want her to testify for who was.

Please any help would be great as this is a depresing situation for her. Thanks all the help.

Re: court supena and testifiy question

Your friend may be compelled to testify to any facts of which she has first-hand knowledge, unless to do so would tend to incriminate her in a crime. If she is not in danger of being charged for the events she will testify about, she has no privilege not to so testify, and could be in contempt of court should she refuse.
