Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Iowa

Who pays damages when 3 defendants

My fiancee was in an automobile accident in 1997 in which he was driving the car of his girlfriend at the time. She sued him for the damage to the car. Then the guy whose car was hit sued my fiancee, the girlfriend's father (he must have been the owner of the car) and the Insurance company. So far no one has paid a penny. Who is responsible for paying the guy whose car was hit. The courts awarded the guy $83,000 ( it was a Ford AstroVan). Shouldn't the insurance company have to pay the guy first? I am curious to find out before I get married and we want to buy a house whose responsibility this is?

Re: Who pays damages when 3 defendants

We have joint and several liability in Iowa which means all tortfeasors are on the hook equally. If someone else doesn't pay that means that the others have to pick up the slack.
