Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Iowa

unethical prosecutor and defence attorney

my brother was told by his lawyer to plead guilty because he, (the lawyer ) had a deal with the prosecutor and Miltie was not going to get any time. My brother was sentenced to 6 years federal time and all his lawyer said was. ''I don't know, I guess they lied to me.'' Milt had filed a suit against one of the policemen who had arrested him for improper conduct, and the prosecutor was very angry about this. When my brother said something about an appeal, his lawyer told him ''don't appeal, they will give you more time.'' Don't you think this was inappropriately handled? Do we have any options for appeal? My brother's wife is a drug addict and the only thing Milt did was buy 2 boxes of the drugs you are not suppose to buy because Brenda had been raped by her dealer(or so she says) and Milt did not want her to have to be around those type of people. I know that he might be dumb, and very, very naive, but does this mean he should lose six years of his life?

Re: unethical prosecutor and defence attorney

It's worth pointing out that a prosecutor cannot promise that a court will go along with a plea deal. If he pled guilty he probably waived his right to appeal. It sounds like he might be able to apply for some sort of post conviction review proceeding.
