Use of copywritten music

I would like use a portion of copywritten music for a electronic portfolio college assignment that will only be used in the classroom and personal use, not for redistribution. Is this legal? How much of the music can I insert in the project?

Likely constitutes "fair use" and anyway if the use is limited as you describe it isn't going to come to the attention of any rights enforcement agencies.
