Legal Question in Consumer Law in Iowa
According to pest control reports, my apartment had several months of bed bug infestation before I moved in. No one told me this. The pest control reports show the owner was told to treat for bed bugs before a new tenant (me) moved in, but the owner refused. The pest control manager told the owner that my apartment should not be rented to anyone in its present condition, but the owner rented it to me. I became covered with bed bug welts starting with my first day of occupancy. After I moved in, the pest control company continued to tell the owner to treat for the bed bugs, but the owner refused. After I moved in, I also made several attempts to get help from the owner and they refused. The health department told me it would do no good to move out because I would be taking the bugs with me to a new location. Finally 8 months after I moved in, the lady upstairs contacted the city housing inspector and that's how we got help. I lived with bed bugs for 226 days and nights. The infestation in my apartment was so bad that the bed bugs came out even during the daylight. I am covered with scars and the emotional toll it has taken cannot be explained. What can I do?
