Who is responsible for medical expenses for someone who is in police custody?

Although they may not like it, if you're in the custody of the state, the state is the payor of last resort which means that if you are without resources the state has to pick up the tab. That does not mean that your insurance company is off the hook if you have insurance, or that you are relieved of the responsibility to pay if you have the funds to do so.
