Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Iowa

old bill

I purchased an item from a music store about 16 years ago. I gave my wife (at that time) the money to pay bills. I received a phone call on 1-14-03 from a collection agency telling me that the bill was never paid. The collection agency wants the payment in full and would not let me set up a payment plan. Do I still have to pay a bill that is 16 years old? What should I do?

Tell them the debt has expired due to the running of the Statute of Limitations.
