Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Iowa
Collections Law
I recently recieved a collections letter from an attorney saying I owed money to my old apartment complex. I have never recieved any communication from the apartment complex regarding this debt. Do they have the right to send me to collections before sending me a bill?

Re: Collections Law
Yes, BUT did the letter comply with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act? For example, did the attorney advise you that he/she was a debt collector and that the letter was an attempt to collect a debt. Did the letter advise you that you had 30 days to dispute the debt, that you have the right to demand verification of the debt, and to be advised of the original creditor? Did the letter threaten you in any way? Is the debt barred because it is too old?
