Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Iowa

Divorce Finances

I have a client who is divorced. His divorce decree states that all bills incurred during the marriage should be paid 1/2 by each party. His wages are being garnished for the full bill from a hospital. They say it is his responsibility to collect from his ex-wife once they collect from him. Is this true and is this legal? He cannot afford to pay for his ex-wife's bill.

Re: Divorce Finances

Please tell me you're not an attorney! If he has personal liability for the bill, the creditor can collect from him. The divorce decree is between the two parties to the divorce and does not affect the rights of other parties, e.g., creditors.
