Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Iowa

loan co-signer's rights

I co-signed a car loan 2 years ago with my now ex-boyfriend. He kept the car under the condition he would continue the loan payments. I received notice from the bank that he has not paid for the last two months; I know where he lives but he will not answer my calls, emails, etc. I do not have a set of keys to the car and there are about 24 payments left on the loan. I would like to keep my good credit intact but he is not cooperating and does not show any intentions of making the payments. The bank has said they will take legal action in 10 days. I am willing to make the car payments but only if the car is in my posession. Do I have the right to take the car from him? Will the police help me with this? Please advise me in this matter.

Re: loan co-signer's rights

Police will not get involved, it is civil, you need to hire a lawyer to get possession and sort out who has rights and responsibilities as to this auto and its obligations.
