Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Iowa

On Monday, I went to my bank's ATM and tried to withdraw some cash from my account. It said I had a zero balance in both my savings and checking account. I then went inside the bank and asked them why I had a zero balance. They gave me a piece of paper with a phone number and a dollar amount of $2500 and said that a sheriff must have come in the bank and gave them papers. ( WHAT?!?!) I came home and called the number. The lady told me she was from a debt collector from JPMorgan Case credit card that I had almost 9 or 10 years ago. She said they are "garnishing my account" and the order holds for 120 days. Then I can maybe make payment arrangements after that. How is this legal? Why wasn't I notified by a sheriff coming to my house? Perhaps a court date that I could have prevented this from happening? I logged on my online banking yesterday (Wednesday) and I now have a negative balance of $142 from them doing this to my account. I'm just devastated because my money is ALL GONE. It's just my luck, it's probably totally legal.

I would suggest you contact an attorney to review this matter and see whether the bank's got any basis for doing this. Don't give up yet.
