Legal Question in Criminal Law in Iowa
my 16 year old daughter got caught shoplifting in iowa woodbury county less than 200$. First offense. do I need to get an attorney? What is the process and will this stay on her record to where it will hurt her for a job or career in the future. she wanted to go into the air force. :(

I would say get an attorney. What you need is a deferred judgment which is often granted for a young person and a first offense. Unfortunately the arrest record cannot be expunged. If she completes probation and meets the terms and conditions of probation then the judgment will be "deferred"-that is she can says she was never convicted of a crime. In any event all this would have to be disclosed to the recruiter, because they can and will check, and the worst thing a person can do when they essay to work in government service is to lie about it. A conversation with a military recruiter might help to clarify things.
