Legal Question in Criminal Law in Iowa

16 yr old moved into adult court

My 16 yr old son was arrested on some serious charges. He was extremely under the influence at the time to the point that he does not even remember his arrest, how it took place and me being there shortly thereafter during some questioning. We signed a paper allowing the police to question him at that time. I have instructed him now to not say anything else without his lawyer...it's my understanding that although he was not in his right mind during questioning that they can use this or misconstrue this against him. They have also bumped him into the adult system due to the charges...MY QUESTION IS...are they going to be able to use against him what he said while under the influence? I even asked for a nurse to come in and check him because he was so out of it and his eyes were dilated so badly. She took his pulse, said it was 88 and he was fine. Is all this normal how the police handle things? I have no idea what to do or expect as I have never been through this. I just want to make sure he is not manipulated when he doesn't or may not understand whats going on and his rights.
